You will need a 5″ x 11″ piece of fabric for the pocket, 12 1/2″ x 17 1/2″ pieces of your exterior fabric, interior fabric, and iron on adhesive, a 64″ strip of bias tape for the edges and a 24″ piece of ribbon for the ties.

Attach your exterior fabric and interior fabric together according to the iron on adhesive instructions.
This is usually something to the effect of put the paper side of the iron on adhesive down with the wrong side of your exterior fabric to the sticky part and iron.

Peal the paper side off.

Put the wrong side of your interior fabric against the sticky part.

Iron them together.

Your interior and exterior fabrics should now be one double sided piece of fabric. Even all of the placemat edges, I use a rotary cutter, but you could just draw a straight line and cut it with scissors.

This will make applying your bias tape much easier.

Now fold your pocket fabric in half lengthwise right sides together and sew a line up both long edges with a 1/2″ seam allowance.

Trim some of the excess fabric away from the corners.

Turn your pocket right side out and iron it flat.

Top-stitch the top of your pocket.

Place your pocket upside down on top of your interior fabric on either the right or left hand side, your choice. I like mine to be 2″ in from the side and 3″ up from the bottom, but it doesn’t have to be in that exact spot.

Fold your pocket right side up, leaving 1/2″ overlapping at the bottom and pin it in place.

Sew around the long sides and bottom of your pocket with a 1/4″ seam allowance. I use a color thread that coordinates with my exterior fabric so it isn’t noticeable on the outer side, but you could also just add the pocket before you fuse the interior and exterior fabrics together so there would be no visible seam.

Attach your bias tape around all 4 edges of your placemat. If you need help with bias tape, there is an great video tutorial on angry chicken.

Attach the center of your ribbon to the exterior of your placemat on the end opposite your pocket. I like mine to be centered, but if you want it offset that is good too.

Now your placemat is finished. To use you simply tuck your silverware and a napkin into the pocket.

Roll your placemat toward the end with your ribbon ties.

Then tie a pretty bow to hold it in a roll.
