One day, about a month ago, Shelby called me from school to see if I could bring her notebook to her. She told me where to find it and said there was homework in it. I went and retrieved it from her desk and I’m not usually the type to snoop through my kids’ things, but I wanted to see if it was really needed or if she just wanted it, so I flipped through it. There was one page of homework in it, but she was also writing poems and my curiosity got the better of me. I sat down and started to read, she’d been learning about poems in school and had written several acrostic poems. I came across one called “My Hero” and as I read I cried, then I went and got my camera…

I found someone to drop her notebook off and never mentioned that I’d read it. I felt awful about snooping and figured if she wanted me to see it, she’d eventually show me. A few days later she brought me the notebook needing help with ideas. She was writing poems for her family for Christmas. I felt horrible and told her that I’d already read the ones she’d written. She was very disappointed, but got over it quickly and I helped her come up with ideas for the others, so all was well.
Lesson learned… stay out of my kids’ things!
Any lesson learned is a good one. I know that staying out of my children’s things is going to be hard for me. I want to know everything they are doing – hopefully I won’t smother them as they get older and more independent.
My parent’s always allowed me my space, so I will offer my children the same.
At least what you found was something wonderful! It made me cry.
