Brave boys. Not me, I’m afraid of heights. Once after my Dad had his first heart attack my mom asked me to cut a branch that had broken in the front yard tree. They’d had really high winds and the branch was hanging out over the side walk where the kids on the block walked to the elementary school across the street from my folks home. Man, it wasn’t sawing the branch that scared me, it was the climbing up the ladder and then getting positioned on a lower branch in the tree and roping myself off so I’d be safe. I knew how to rope myself off because I’d watched my Dad do it alot as a kid. He’d been a professional tree trimmer when my mom married him and before he got a job as a lineman and foreman at the local power plant. So, I knew my folks needed the help and I made myself do it. Yet, afterwards my stomach was still in such turmoil that I literally got diarrhea and really bad stomach cramps from just the fear of it all. Then I had falling out of the tree and bashing my head open dreams for several nights after doing it.
I’m glad I made myself do it though so the branch wouldn’t crash down on any little kids and so my parents didn’t have the possibility of getting sued.
I’m glad I did it to because even though my Dad was just home from the hospital I knew if I hadn’t done it, he would have been in that tree doing it himself.
Yet, I say to your sons that they are brave.
